Pen Power Poetry instructor Izzy (far left) with girls from the S x PPP program, whom she taught to write and perform spoken word.

Since August, the Sisterhood Program girls have been exploring spoken word poetry and prose throughout Izzy's lessons. These sessions have included editing, writing, and analyzing poems by Audre Lorde, Amanda Gorman, and Maya Angelou.

On November 24th, 2024, a series of weekly Wednesday workshops, held over Google Meet, culminated in a powerful spoken word poetry event. Eight of Izzy’s students performed. The performances were full of raw emotions––crying and laughter––showcasing their strengths and truths.

Izzy is deeply proud of each of these young women. Spoken word is when poetry and theatre have a baby. When the audience is so moved they cry with you. They laugh with you. Grow angry with you. When right then, all that matters is your voice and your message. These girls' voices matter. Always.

"Isabelle's workshops were inspiring! Her bubbly and warm demeanor guided my students and really helped them come out of their shells to find their creativity. Their poems and presentations were amazing, as a result! Thank you, Isabelle!"
